EPA 608 Exam Questions: What to Expect by Section

What does the Core section actually test?
Ozone science and the regulatory framework, not equipment repair. EPA’s own published test topics for Core cover: the environmental impact of CFC, HCFC, and HFC refrigerants and their relative ozone-depletion potential; the Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol, including CFC and R-22 phaseout dates and venting prohibitions; Section 608 regulations like high- versus low-pressure refrigerant definitions and the sales restriction; substitute refrigerants and lubricant incompatibility; basic refrigeration cycle knowledge; the three R’s (recover, recycle, reclaim); recovery techniques; dehydration/evacuation; safety, including PPE and cylinder handling; and shipping label requirements (EPA’s Test Topics page). A question like “what is the maximum penalty under the Clean Air Act for a venting violation” is a real Core topic area, not a made-up example.

How many questions do you need right to pass?
At least 70% correct per section on a proctored exam, which in practice means 18 of 25 questions, since scores round to whole questions. Open-book sections, where a provider allows them, require 84%, or 21 of 25. Mainstream Engineering’s own exam procedures page states this directly: “The passing grade for each section is 72%, meaning you have to get 18 out of 25 questions correct,” which is the practical rounding of the federal 70% minimum on a 25-question section. Core taken open-book can’t be counted toward Universal certification; Universal requires a proctored Core exam, per EPA’s certification requirements page.
Do the same questions repeat between attempts?
Not identically. Certifying organizations draw from a shared pool of roughly 350 EPA-controlled questions across all four sections, so a retake pulls a fresh set rather than repeating your exact missed questions. That’s also why memorizing specific question-and-answer pairs from an old test dump is a weaker strategy than actually understanding the topic areas EPA publishes, since the next question on that same topic may be worded differently.
Are A2L and other newer refrigerants showing up in current questions?
Increasingly, in the substitute-refrigerant and lubricant-compatibility topics under Core. The federal question bank and topic list haven’t been restructured around A2L mildly-flammable refrigerants specifically, but the “absence of drop-in replacements” and “incompatibility of substitute refrigerants with many lubricants” topics EPA already lists are exactly where that content lives. Providers including Mainstream Engineering now sell separate HC (A3) and HFO (A2L) low-GWP certification add-ons outside the core 608 exam, which tells you the industry sees this as a growing, distinct topic area rather than something folded quietly into the existing Core questions.
