EPA 608 Core Practice Test: Master the Core Exam

An EPA 608 Core practice test is a 25-question sample exam covering the material every certification type shares: stratospheric ozone science, the Clean Air Act’s Section 608 rules, refrigerant recovery basics, and cylinder and system safety. On the real exam, Core requires 70% correct (18 of 25) when proctored, or 84% (21 of 25) if you take the open-book, mail-in version instead of a proctored session.

Core is different from the three Type sections in one important way: it’s mandatory no matter which certification you’re going for. Whether you only ever plan to touch small appliances (Type I) or you want full Universal coverage, you pass Core first. That makes it the one section every single candidate has in common, and the one most practice test sites cover the shallowest, usually a handful of ozone-depletion questions and little else.

What does the Core section actually test?

Based on EPA’s published test topics and the structure ESCO Institute uses in its certification manual, Core covers a specific list, not a vague “environmental basics” theme:

  • Stratospheric ozone depletion and how CFC and HCFC refrigerants contribute to it
  • Global warming potential and how it differs from ozone depletion potential
  • Refrigerant characteristics and identification
  • Pressure classifications: low, high, and very high pressure appliances, by refrigerant boiling point
  • Refrigerant oils
  • The Montreal Protocol and the Clean Air Act’s Section 608 program
  • Recovery techniques and recovery equipment types
  • Leak detection
  • Dehydration
  • General safety and cylinder-specific safety
  • Shipping and sale restrictions

We wrote these from the topic list above, not copied from any existing quiz bank. Each includes the correct answer and why.

  1. What primarily causes the stratospheric ozone depletion that Section 608 exists to address? Chlorine and bromine atoms released when CFC and HCFC refrigerants break down high in the atmosphere. Those atoms catalytically destroy ozone molecules, which is the entire regulatory basis for the certification program.

  2. A technician disconnects a hose during a recovery procedure and less than 0.1 ounce of refrigerant escapes. Is this a violation of the venting prohibition? No. EPA classifies small, unavoidable releases during a good-faith recovery attempt as “de minimis,” and they fall outside the venting ban.

  3. What’s the difference between recycled and reclaimed refrigerant? Recycled refrigerant is cleaned for reuse but doesn’t meet the purity standard required for resale to a different owner. Reclaimed refrigerant is processed and chemically verified against that purity standard (AHRI 700) before it can be resold.

  4. Which boiling-point range at atmospheric pressure defines a “high-pressure appliance” under Section 608? Roughly negative 58°F to 50°F (negative 50°C to 10°C), covering common refrigerants like R-22, R-410A, and R-404A. Refrigerants that boil above 50°F, like R-123, run low-pressure equipment such as large chillers instead.

  5. What must a technician do before opening a system that contains refrigerant, regardless of certification type? Recover the refrigerant to the level required for that appliance before breaking into the system. Breaking a seal without recovering first is what the venting prohibition is built to prevent.

  6. Are refrigerant cylinders required to be painted a specific color under federal law? No. There’s no EPA color-coding mandate; that’s a common myth. Cylinder color conventions come from manufacturers and industry practice, not federal regulation. Core safety questions focus instead on overpressurization risk, proper storage temperature, and handling refrigerants heavier than air in confined spaces.

  7. Who is legally allowed to purchase refrigerant covered under Section 608? Only technicians certified for the appropriate type, or their certified employer’s business. Retailers are required to verify certification status before selling regulated refrigerant.

  8. What does “dehydration” refer to in Core-level refrigeration service? Removing moisture from a system before charging it with refrigerant, typically through evacuation with a vacuum pump. Moisture left in a system can form acids or ice that damage components and reduce efficiency.

Why does Core get scored differently open-book versus proctored?

Because it’s easier to look up an answer than to reason through one under supervision, so EPA sets a higher bar (84% instead of 70%) for the open-book path to offset that advantage. The tradeoff: open-book testing is more convenient logistically, often mail-in, but demands a near-perfect score, while proctored testing is stricter on setting but forgives more missed questions.

Does passing Core alone let you do any work?

No. Core by itself isn’t a standalone certification. You need Core plus at least one Type to legally handle refrigerant, since Core establishes the shared regulatory and safety knowledge, while each Type covers the equipment-specific procedures for the systems you’ll actually touch.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Core practice test the same difficulty as the real Core exam? A well-built one should be. The real exam draws from the topic list EPA publishes, so a practice test that skips categories like dehydration or shipping restrictions is testing a narrower exam than the one you’ll actually sit.

Can I retake just the Core section if I fail it? Yes. Sections are scored independently, so a failed Core section doesn’t affect a Type section you already passed, and vice versa. You only retest the section you missed.

Do I need to pass Core before I can take a Type section? Not necessarily in terms of order. Some providers let you sit Type sections first. But you need Core plus at least one Type passed before you’re certified for anything, regardless of which order you test in.

Is Core harder than the Type sections? Most candidates find Core more conceptual (regulations, ozone science, general safety) while Type sections lean more procedural (specific equipment, specific techniques). Neither is objectively harder; it depends on whether you learn better from rules or hands-on procedure.
