What's the difference between Type I, Type II, and Type III certification?+
Type I covers small appliances: hermetically sealed units factory-charged with 5 pounds of refrigerant or less. Type II covers high-pressure appliances like residential AC, heat pumps, and most commercial refrigeration. Type III covers low-pressure appliances, mainly centrifugal chillers. Every exam also includes a Core section that everyone takes.
Should I take Universal or just one type?+
Universal certification means you passed Core plus all three type exams, and it's what most employers want to see. If you'll only ever service small appliances, Type I alone is enough. But if you work residential, commercial, and chillers, take Universal in one sitting.
Is the EPA 608 exam open book?+
Type II, Type III, and Universal exams are closed book and proctored. Type I is the exception: EPA rules allow approved providers to offer it as a non-proctored online or mail-in test, which is effectively open book.
How many questions are on the exam?+
25 multiple-choice questions per section. Everyone takes the 25-question Core, plus 25 questions for each type you're testing for. Universal is Core plus all three types, 100 questions total.
Can I take the 608 test online?+
Type I: yes, fully online and non-proctored through EPA-approved providers. Type II, III, and Universal must be proctored: in person at a testing organization, or by live remote proctor where the provider offers it.
What score do I need to pass?+
70% in each section: at least 18 of 25 questions correct. You need to pass Core plus at least one type section to earn a certification.
Does EPA 608 certification expire?+
No. EPA 608 certification doesn't expire. Once you pass, it's good for life. Keep a copy of your card; employers and supply houses will ask for it.
